The Story: White Eagle

Duke Lech was the first Duke of Poland, and in his youth he was a prideful man. One day he came upon a nest of white eagles, and as an avid falconer, determined that one of the baby eagles was meant to be his. When he attempted to steal one of the babies, the mother eagle fought him off. Duke Lech drew his dagger and attacked the mother, but she continued to fight to defend her nest, her white feathers becoming blood-stained. Realizing the mother’s fierce dedication to her offspring and their freedom, Duke Lech relented, and the eagle has represented the Polish spirit of independence and liberty to this day.
